We are all the same

Posters for the International Anti-Racism Day on March 21st 2011

Racism is wrong and should not be tolerated any longer!
It is wrong because foreigners are also humans and they should have exactly the same rights and conditions and should be able to live like everyone else.

Our task was to design a poster for March 21st, the "International Anti-Racism Day". First we did some research in the internet and talked about prejudices. Then we had to create a poster in black and white against racism and think of our own slogan.

Deleted Scenes

Deleted Scene 1: "Canal Bank"
In this scene the viewer gets to see the children of the family Khan, plus Tariq`s girlfriend and the other white character. Originally this scene was supposed to show us what the individual characters of the family think about their identity. But the director didn’t want to put it into the movie, because it doesn`t look like the 1970`s. The location simply looks to modern and the fact that the viewer doesn`t need to get to know what they think about themselves, because this is part of the whole movie. So he didn’t want to have the scene in the movie.

Deleted Scene 2: "Fish Market"
The deleted scene, which is called “Fish Market”, is about George Khan, the father of the family, and his youngest son Sajid. They are talking about the recent arguments and problems in the family, while they are going across the market. George is trying to justify his violent behavior. That is the reason why he is talking about traditions and values in the family. According to the director the scene was deleted because of a few reasons: First of all the scene was cut because of its simultaneity to another scene and the director would have had to use a lot of jumpcuts between these scenes in order to show the viewer both scenes at the same time. If the Fish Market scene and the scene in which the other Khan-children are visiting the oldest brother Nazir in his headshop had been combined, this would have been very confusing and hard to understand.
Another reason for the deletion of the scene is its content: George justifying his behavior did not fit in the conception of the producers about George because he was always shown in a very obstinate way.

Deleted Scene 4: "The Bar Scene"
This scene was not used in the film, because of the racism against blacks and other minorities. The fact that the pub leader offends the afro-americans who just entered the pub is one reason for it. Another one is that he wants them killed by a spare that cuts their throats. The whole group makes fun of the three Navy men, but Abdul doesn’t laugh about it, because he is also “from a foreign country” (half Pakistani, half British). The pub leader also calls Abdul “Ganja” which means in this case that Abdul can’t work really hard. This is a typical prejudice of Indian, Pakistani, a.s.o. As a result of the cursing Abdul chokes the pub leader and wants him to call him by his real name. As soon as the pub leader calls his name twice Abdul leaves the pub to go home, where he starts crying while his father is praying. The scene was deleted because the director doesn’t want to boost prejudices and racism.
